No serious beach lover can visit Crete without spending a day on the world famous Elafonissi beach with its pink sand and multi coloured blue, topaz and turquoise sea.
Situated on the southwest tip of the island, Elafonissi is ranked among the top 10 beaches in Europe, a place of exceptional natural beauty, challenging the best of the Caribbean, with pinkish sand in many places, taking its color from millions of crushed shells.
Our private trip will take you for a 1.5 hours drive through the imposing gorge of Topolia and the beautiful lush green village of Elos on a scenic landscape of Crete inland, with tiny villages and traditional olive groves.
Elafonissi means “Treasure island” in Greek, because the island was once occupied by pirates and it was believed that they hid their treasures here. The island is home to more than 100 rare plants and also offers protection and shelter for the shy but beautiful rare loggerhead sea turtles which lay their eggs under the watchful protection of the Cretan authorities. This jewel of the Mediterranean is officially a Greek protected reserve, and is technically an island, separated from the southwest coast of Crete by a shallow, warm lagoon and sandbar that is submerged just under water.
The island truly is a nature lover's paradise but the mainland beach itself draws many visitors during peak season. On either sides of the island there are less crowded beaches, with very beautiful azure sea colors. Walking along the peninsula, one can find some secluded, more quiet coves as well as naturist area near the west end while the eastern side of the beach, in front of the lagoon, has umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars and changing rooms.
We will spend several hours here soaking up the sun and enjoying a pack lunch that we have bring for you. On the way back, we will stop in one of the mountain villages for a refreshment or ice cream, before arriving at your hotel with a fresh sun tan and wonderful memories of a day spent in paradise.
