Falassarna beach with amazing fish lunch at Sfinari
This day is a real treat, and would always be on my must-do list and the beauty of this exclusive day is that we have it on almost all our escape weeks, in fact we wouldn’t run a beach escape without it! Not just because Falassarna beach on the west coast offers stunning views and some of the most beautiful crystal clear water to swim in but because the lunch included on this memorable day out is taken at one of the most authentic, fabulous yet totally rustic fish taverns on the whole of the island of Crete, made famous by its world beating kakavia (Cretan fisherman’s soup).
The exotic beach of Falassarna is located at the western base of Cape Gramvousa and is over 3 km long, in fact there are five consecutive beaches, large enough to never feel crowded, the main one being over 1 km long and 150 m wide. The sand in Falassarna is whitish and very soft, making the water a beautiful tropical turquoise, perfect for swimming.
After enjoying the morning on this beach and swimming in its luxurious waters, we leave the hot early afternoon sun for the short coastal drive a little further down the west coast to the tiny hamlet of Sfinari, to a truly Cretan tavern right next to the sea, with the waves lapping within earshot, as we sit down for lunch literally two metres from the near empty beach.
Sfinari is all about lunch, though that seems too smaller word for what is truly an eating experience you will never forget.
On arrival, we will go into mama's kitchen where she will show you the fresh fish caught that day along with the local cheese, seaweed delicacy and other treats, most of which is grown, harvested or caught by the family that run the tavern; it’s a collective family effort that brings us to a long lunch where we will enjoy authentic Cretan cookery at its best.
Tapenade made from their own olives, stuffed chargrilled cuttlefish, delicious home grown vegetables (the beans are incredible!) seaweed, Cretan salad, amazing Kakavia to name but a few of the delights that await us in this (please note that for none fish eaters or those with specific dietary requirements we will arrange alternative dishes on a bespoke basis to ensure you don’t miss this wonderful experience) all washed down with mountain wine made by the family and a surprise desert which will invariably include their own honey (yes they keep bees too!) will leave you yearning for a late siesta!
